ADULT: Wingspan - 25 - 32 mm. A real lepidopteran treat with the forewings of an appealing reddish-brown to pinkish-brown (sometimes darker) with a series of fine black and white markings. The hindwings are grey or buff. LARVAE: The reddish brown to pinkish ochrous well-camouflaged larvae feed on Heather (Calluna) and Heath (Erica). They are adorned with a series of pale lines that are broken and edged in fuscous. The spiracular line is pinkish-white and edged above with dark. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light and feeds on flowers during the day. Can be prone to wandering. HABITAT: A moorland, heathland and occasionally coastal species. FLIGHT PERIOD: On the wing during June to August. STATUS: Resident and common. |
